Session Breakdown

The Essentials of Good Practice: Helping Families Raise Hurt Kids
What is mindfulness and helping caregivers make a paradigm shift about effective parenting? Know what to address, find the strengths and competencies of the child/parent and build on that. Focus on the essential features of building connections for life, rather than on compliance and consequences for failure.

When Goals Collide: Moving Families to Change
What do you do when your family's case plan goals differ from yours or those of your agency? This issue arises in many cases but is particularly evident in a family centered approach where you listen reflectively to your families and actively involve them in decision making. As you elicit goals for change and planning, some families may not reflect what you think is best for them. How you handle this sensitive situation can determine whether the family continues to pursue change.
Based on the “Stages of Change” work of Prochaska & DiClemente, this workshop will discuss moving families through the first stages of change, Contemplation to Preparation. Participants will learn to clarify the differences and boundaries between the client's goals and the agency's goals.

Sexual Safety in Placement
Professionals and families will develop knowledge and parenting skills as we address the traumagenic issues/needs of children in placement who have been sexually abused. Discover how to create a healing milieu to counteract the negative impact of past trauma on a child’s psychological and cognitive development, and to enhance positive self-esteem.

The Use of Film, Social Media, & Relationship Building in Family Centered Practice
Film: Wards of the Crown - 42 min. followed by a workshop
Filmmaker Andrée Cazabon has lived on the streets and in youth institutions. In her third film, Cazabon follows the ups and downs of four youth exiting the child welfare system between the ages of 16 and 20. These stories, coupled with the filmmaker’s own experience will inspire attendees to participate in a discussion on Family Centered Practice, permanency and creative uses of social media and films in connecting with youth in care. Attendees will leave with practical tips in the prevention of teen runaways, school drop-out and at-risk behaviors by helping youth thrive though critical relationships.

Common Seeds Planted by Harvesters of Hope
According to Mr. Bob Danzig, Seed Planters occupy the foster care community. His motivational keynote presentation will identify, amplify, and celebrate those common qualities that affirm the noble purpose of organizations within the System of Care. Participants will gain deeper insight affirming their noble work; invite reflections on the hope they create; develop greater appreciation for what they do each and every day and better understand the personal impact each of them have on the children and families they touch.

The Softer Values of Success
Bob Danzig took over a wounded, demoralized nationwide company which had been “managed more than led”. He set targets to include a fresh culture of “excellence”: an inclusive environment which would not accept labor union impediments; a pride of what the freshened company would celebrate; a disciplined mechanism to cause businesses spread all over the nation to feel like “backyard neighbor participants”. On his watch, cash flow grew 100 FOLD from a seven figure performance to a 12 figure performance. The workshop will speak to the key differences between managing and leading. We will speak to the difference between great functioning places and truly excellent places. And speak to the background, the challenges, and the road map for achieving culture, pride and performance.

Managing Multiple Diagnoses
Brief overview of several common diagnoses including: ASD, PTSD, ODD, Depression, Anxiety, FASD, RAD, and ADHD. Discussion of symptoms, behaviors, origins, treatment, medication, and prognosis. Discussion of dual diagnoses or co-morbidity, which is very common. What to consider addressing first or consider primary when developing interventions and parenting.

Domestic Violence in the lives of Children
This workshop will highlight the impact of domestic violence on the lives of children. In the research literature, children are often called “witnesses” to domestic violence. Children are not “witnesses”. This term implies a passive role - but children living with conflict and abuse will actively interpret, predict, assess their roles in causing a “fight,” worry about the consequences, engage in problem solving, and/or take measures to protect themselves or siblings, both physically and emotionally. Each child is unique. Even children in the same family are affected in different ways, depending upon factors such as age, gender, relationship to the abuser, and role in the family.
Additionally, assessing the effects of domestic violence is difficult because many children subjected to Domestic Violence will deny any problems related to the situation out of fear of losing what little security they have. They continue to live with the situation and may not communicate the trauma they are experiencing until they begin to act out in socially unacceptable ways, or display self-destructive symptoms.

‘The Power of Hope’ from ex-street kid turned filmmaker
Film: Letters to a Street Child - 25 min. followed by a candid discussion & workshop
Watch the inspirational true story of former street-kid, Andrée Cazabon through her first film, Letters to a Street Child and participate in a follow-up discussion on what helps youth and families through times of crisis from one who has lived it. The film is a moving testimony to the power of change within all of us. The discussion will be followed by a hands-on workshop with the "Letters of Hope for youth project". Following the workshop take back the ‘Letters of Hope’ to your community and engage with youth in spreading hope from youth to youth.
