As you might already know, Florida
has a significant budget deficit. Right now-our
legislators are in Tallahassee trying to figure out what
they are going to do. Both the House and Senate have
produced devastating budget cuts to services for abused
children who have already suffered. These cuts will
impact services such as the adoption subsidy, prevention
programs for at-risk children and families in the
community, services for children in the foster care
system, independent living services and front line
workforce.
In light of these pending budget
cuts to children’s services statewide-we are encouraging
all of our partners to take an active role in advocating
for children’s funding.
We are asking that you call your
local legislators, as many or all if you can, write them
or email them and make the following points:
- You are a foster and/or
adoptive parent.
- You don’t agree with the
budget that is proposed to cut the services for the
children you take care of.
- Children in your own community
will not get the protection and services they need.
- Please support the Governor’s
budget-which recommends not touching children’s
services.
One voice can make a difference! I
have attached sample letters for you-all you have to do
is fill in your own personal information. There are two
letters for foster parents to send, and two letters for
adoptive parents. I have also attached a list of your
local legislators and Governor Crist-and how to get in
touch with them via mail, phone or email.
